Chicago in January is cold:
Toronto in January is colder.
Imagine my delight when informed that I would soon be visiting these hospitable locales, all in the pursuit of commerce. As I was preparing for the trip, I checked the weather; there were not very many degrees in the forecast. That is to say, current conditions indicated less than zero degrees, while the forecast for my trip dates showed a handful (upper 20s, possibility of snow). And apparently weather science is pretty good these days, because that’s exactly what I got: a few degrees either side of freezing, and a few idle snowflakes from time to time in Toronto.
As soon as I get my camera and my card reader in the same location, I’ll post hotel window shots.
Bird list from Canada:
a snowball that I tried hard to turn into a Snowy Owl
Red-tailed Hawk
Rock Pigeon
American Robin
icterid species
House Sparrow
Birds seen in Chicago:
Cooper’s Hawk (see image below)
Epilogue: In winter, I always arrange my travel so that I’m on nonstop flights if I possibly can. Nothing is worse than being late for a connecting flight when all you want to do is get home in time to see your family. But now, twice in a row for Toronto, I’ve had my travel plans completely fouled up. It’s about a 3-hour flight from Toronto to Miami, and on the two occasions I’ve visited our friends north of the border, my flight home has been delayed for four hours. That’s right: each time I’ve visited Canada, I’ve left an hour after I was supposed to have arrived. Waah waah waah.
