I never realized how dependent this blog is on easy access to natural areas. Now that our office is in downtown Fort Lauderdale, with its abundance of tall buildings and rank smells, and its paucity of green space, I’m discovering just how little interest I have in blogging about the nature of downtown. Granted, I haven’t had the chance to explore very far afield, between going to the library, setting up a storage facility, and finding my way around the new neighborhood.
A few things I’ve noticed in the few days I’ve been here: a Colt 45 can on the stairs to the parking garage; I was idly wondering how long it would last before the garage cleaning crew took it away, so I left it there Monday evening when I went to my car. It was still there Tuesday morning, and Tuesday night. But on Wednesday morning, it was gone. By pure luck, I actually saw the person who carted it away; just another downtown office worker, but one more public minded (and less empirical) than I. I curse him for cutting short my experiment, but bless him for his civic-mindedness.
A helicopter drifted down outside my window this afternoon, on its way to a landing pad on the garage across the street (where I park my car). I was too surprised to try to take a picture with my P5100 point and wait, but it wouldn’t have come out anyway. I tried every setting I could think of to get it to focus on the view out my window yesterday, and it steadfastly refuses to focus on anything but the reflection of the tinted glass. So I’ll need to haul out the D70 before I can show you the view from my window.
So there you have the first few bars of my downtown blues; if I didn’t have a long drive tonight, I might try to visit some downtown bars on my way home to try to get rid of ’em…
