Saturday night at 11:19 eastern standard time the December (or winter in the northern hemisphere) solstice occurs. What does that mean? Not much. Christmas is coming, day length will stop decreasing, and sunrise and sunset will start moving north again.
Here’s an image from NASA describing the situation:
Other than that, it’s pretty much business as usual.
Most likely to honor the occasion, my guitar guru, David Hamburger, wrote a little piece called “Soulstice.” Groan, if you must.
It’s a steady-bass blues in E with some fun chord changes. There are two versions of it: a simple, fundamental version for guitaristically challenged dudes like me, and a more complicated version introduced by a vamp (not a vampire, just some repeated chords in a pattern before the piece proper begins). I’m still working on the embellished version, but here’s a link to a nearly successful take of me playing the fundamental piece.
