Apparently, and I didn’t know this until Marcella told me, Eric is a “banana” body type. Turns out that there are several different body types, and that they become evident even in infancy. Bananas, apparently, are able to eat and eat without gaining weight (sounds like me until just a few short years ago). Apples and pears, on the other hand, are apt to put on weight, because they don’t burn calories as efficiently. (Perhaps too efficiently; many parents in our shoes are concerned that their babies simply aren’t putting on the weight that they’re “supposed to.” Eric, for example, is in the 25th percentile for weight, while he’s literally off the charts for height.)
The scientific research behind this characterization is a bit hard to find, but Dr. Sears has a page about body types that might be of some use, if you’re interested in fact-checking. Interestingly, that general page is entitled “obesity,” while the Google Book Search linked to above is from a book, Feeding the Picky Eater. Me, I’m not going to fact-check this one. I’m perfectly content to let this remain on the intuitive level: it sounds right, and I’m not looking for much more. (Does that mean I have something in common with our chief decider? It can’t always be bad to go with your gut, can it, even though when done on the professional/political level it can put the country in the worst mess it’s ever been in?)
Maybe it can, but it hasn’t.
Loved your observations on why go out in the mid-day sun. My thoughts exactly. There’s so much to see and learn, gotta be there. I enjoy your writing.
Exciting news about the teeth. Hi to your family. J
