A Florida native, Gymnanthes lucida (known variously as crabwood and oysterwood) has leetle teensy-tinsy flowers. You need to get up real close, with a macro lens, if you want to take a good picture. If you just want to take any old picture, it’ll probably wind up looking something like this:
What I like about crabwood is that it’s pretty self-contained. It grows up, rather than out, so while it’s a small tree, it’s not a big fat shrub the way Chrysobalanus icaco (cocoplum) can get to be. I swear, between the beautyberry (my all-time favorite taxonomic name, I think: Callicarpa americana) and the cocoplum, my too-infrequent visits to the gardens become prunefests! Note to self: plant slow-growing stoppers if you don’t want to be a hedgetrimmer for the rest of your life!
If you want to see more flowers from the backyard, check out my previous post.
