Several people have posted photos of nice aurora borealis displays seen last night from Atascadero. I checked the sky before turning in last night, but I didn’t see anything; I must have retired too soon. However, this morning I wanted to take a peek at the activity on the sun that’s causing all this ruckus with our atmosphere. Here’s what I saw, first through the Nikon in “normal” orientation (the way I was looking at the sun through my camera), then in “correct” astronomical orientation, with the sun’s axis of rotation vertical, and finally, because the Sony is a jealous camera, a shot through the Sony:
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many sunspot regions and I know I’ve never seen such a large one before. If I could just figure out why my laptop and imaging software don’t want to work, I’d be able to show some h-alpha pictures, but for now, all I have is white light.
