It’s hard to beat the red-shouldered hawk when you’re looking for a handsome bird of prey. They rarely allow you to get as close as I was able to get to this one on my afternoon walk. The “vignette” effect you see around its tail might explain why: I had a fairly large live oak hiding my approach from the bird, with just barely enough of a window for me to focus on it.
