The other morning as we were walking around the back yard, the wife and I noticed several large shadows flitting across the ground. With an active pair of Red-Tailed Hawks in the neighborhood, we both looked up quickly to verify what we were seeing. And it turned out that it was a small flock of vultures, not a couple of hawks. Still, seeing big birds up close is pretty fun.
A bit later, I was down in the front yard and I saw several vultures actually settling on the power lines and poles right in our yard, which is a bit unusual. They don’t tend to hang out here. I grabbed my camera and took a few photos, but it wasn’t until I wandered out into the street to try to get the light to come from a favorable direction that I understood why the vultures were here. Turns out the street in front of our house had something they want: road kill.
